First-Time Mum vs. Second-Time Mum: How Our Priorities Shift (and Why You Can Have Both!)
Becoming a mum for the first time is a wild ride. You’re deep in research mode, making lists, and prepping for every possible scenario. By baby number two? The focus shifts—big time. But here’s the thing: you don’t have to choose between the cute baby outfits and real birth and postpartum support. You can have both.
As a Central Coast doula, I’ve seen how much our birth experiences shape our next pregnancy and our journey into motherhood. That’s why I help mums prepare not just for birth but for the postpartum period, too—so they feel supported, nourished, and confident every step of the way. Grab the Birth Different 10-module birth course and learn how you can prepare for an empowered birth that will leave you stepping into parenthood a total expert!
First-Time Mum Prep: All the Gear & Excitement
When I was pregnant for the first time, my checklist looked something like this:
✔️ Trying to induce labor at 38 weeks (hello, spicy food, dates, teas, clary-sage oil and curb-walking!)
✔️ The perfect going-home outfit for baby
✔️ A pram with a coffee cup holder (essentials, obviously)
✔️ Dummies, bottles, formula & sterilizers—just in case
✔️ Swaddles in every fabric imaginable (stretch/non stretch/cotton/woven!)
✔️ Big bows and tiny outfits for that aesthetic newborn moment
✔️ Planning my first "hot girl mum walk" (priorities, right?)
Second-Time Mum Prep: The Real Essentials
By the time my second baby was on the way, my focus had completely shifted with new priorities:
✔️ Letting baby pick their own birthday—no pressure, no stress
✔️ Booking a doula in the first trimester for proper birth & postpartum support
✔️ Processing my first birth experience to step into this one with confidence
✔️ Sourcing nourishing postpartum meals (because cooking with a newborn? No thanks)
✔️ Enrolling my postpartum village—lining up help before I needed it
✔️ Embracing skin-to-skin and connection time with my kids, not just cute outfits
✔️ Slowing down, soaking it all up, and honoring the postpartum period
