Make Your Own Affirmation Board for Birth

When my baby cousin announced her pregnancy, I couldn’t wait to celebrate her journey into motherhood… not just as her doula but as family!!!

But as I thought about what gift to give, I realized that she’d likely be inundated with adorable onesies, blankets, and baby toys. I wanted to gift her something different—a gift that would support her emotionally, offer her encouragement, and feel truly personal. So I decided to create a DIY Affirmation Kit: a box full of love, inspiration, and tools to help her feel empowered during pregnancy, birth, and beyond.

She’s having a baby shower in a few weeks, and I’ve suggested it could be a great idea to get her girls to help add to the board, but I also think creating your affirmation board is a nice activity to do in your final weeks of pregnancy when you’re trying to wind down and need a fun task to tick off when your maternity leave starts.

If you’re a doula, a friend, or a family member looking for a heartfelt pregnancy gift, this DIY Affirmation Kit is such a fun thing to put together. It’s simple to create, affordable, and can be tailored to suit the vibe and style of your mama friend.

Plus, it’s a great way to incorporate mindfulness and positivity into her pregnancy experience. Let me show you how to make one!

What’s Inside the Kit?

Here’s what I included in my kit, along with rough costs!

  1. Scrapbook Album ($5)
A blank scrapbook or journal for her to write affirmations, paste inspiring quotes, or add ultrasound photos and pregnancy memories.

  2. Coloured Cardstock and Pens ($7)
Bright paper and sharpies to write or design her own affirmations. You can get fun here and add in metallic pens if you wish!

  3. Mini Wooden Pegs and Twine ($6)
These are for hanging affirmations/photos around the house or birthing space, or to create dimension on the board.

  4. LED Fairy Lights ($10)
These battery lights are epic for adding ambiance and for zig zagging over the board.

  5. Gold Push Pins ($3)
Perfect for pinning affirmations to a corkboard or vision board and super minimalist too.

  6. Pre-Printed Affirmation Cards ($10)
I printed a set of affirmations like “My body knows how to birth my baby” and “I am strong, capable, and loved.” You can make your own on canva or buy them!

  7. Craft Supplies (optional, $5)
Stickers, washi tape, and embellishments for a fun, creative touch.

  8. LED Blowout Candles ($8)
These are another cool addition for the birthing space and can sit either side of the board so that it can be seen even in low lighting

  9. The Affirmation Board ($30)

I went with a more luxe affirmation board on this occasion, and opted for a linen style one, but a simple cork board will do, just make sure it’s big enough!

Total cost: Around $50-$70, but you can adjust based on your budget.

How to make it extra personal…

Here are some ideas to personalize your kit even further:

  • Include a Personalized Letter
Write your mama friend a heartfelt note explaining why you chose to make this gift and how it’s meant to support her.

  • Add a Doula’s Touch
If you’re a doula, include a printed guide with tips for using affirmations during labor, breathing exercises, or branded materials.

  • Print the photos for her
On the Central Coast, there are loads of local printing places you can go, but otherwise Kmart makes it SO easy to get photos printed. Pick some where she looks amazing with her pregnant belly, or choose shots of her with her partner, friends or other kids and include them to save her a trip!

Why Affirmation Kits are the bee’s knees!

Pregnancy can be overwhelming, especially for first-time parents. A DIY Affirmation Kit isn’t just a gift—it’s a tool for emotional and mental support. It encourages the expecting parent to slow down, reflect, and embrace the transformative journey they’re on.

Plus, we know that feeling safe, supported, loved is a key factor in the production of Oxytocin (the hormone that drives contractions!) and affirmation boards can be a beautiful reminder of all these things!! The best part? You can also make them super portable (especially if you’re using battery operated fairy lights) so they make the perfect addition to a hospital room to make things feel a bit more homey.

For doulas, this type of gift also showcases the power of mindfulness and positive reinforcement, aligning beautifully with the care you provide. And if you’re based on the Central Coast, this is a perfect way to connect with your local clients and community by offering a thoughtful, personal touch.

Thinking about making an affirmation board for a friend of yours?! I’d love to see if!! If you do make one, share with me on instagram by either tagging me @themodern.doula or sending me a DM!

Enjoy!
